The meta description is the short summary under your link in search results, and a good one earns the click. Describe the page and its keyword, and get five meta descriptions and five title tags, each counted to fit.
The right length
Search results show roughly 150 to 160 characters of a description on desktop and less on mobile. Each option here lands between 140 and 160 characters, with the key point in the first half in case it is cut short.
Why search engines rewrite descriptions
If a description doesn't match the page or the search, the engine often shows a snippet from the page instead. Describing what the page actually delivers, in the searcher's words, makes it more likely yours is shown.
Title tags matter more
The title tag is a stronger ranking and click signal than the description. Keep it under 60 characters, put the keyword near the front and the brand at the end. Five options are included.
Write the page too
Plan the article itself with the Blog Outline Generator, or write a sales page with the Landing Page Copy Generator.
Questions
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Not directly, but they affect how many people click your result, which is why they are worth writing well.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 140 to 160 characters. Put the most important words first in case it's shortened.
Should every page have a unique meta description?
Yes. Duplicate descriptions make pages look interchangeable in results and are more likely to be rewritten.
