Tags are short words and phrases that tell a platform what your content is about. Enter your topic or title, choose the platform, and this tag generator returns a set of relevant tags in a copyable line, ordered from specific to broad. It works as a YouTube tag generator by default and also gives hashtag and tag ideas for TikTok, Instagram, Etsy listings and blog posts.

How YouTube tags work

YouTube tags are added in the video details when you upload, and viewers do not normally see them. The tag field holds up to 500 characters in total, so the video tags generator keeps its list to 15 to 20 short tags and puts the most specific ones first. YouTube itself says tags play a minimal role in discovery compared with the title, thumbnail and description, and that they are most useful when the topic is commonly misspelled. Spend most of your effort on the title and thumbnail and treat tags as a small extra.

Specific first, broad last

A good set starts with the exact topic, such as 'repot monstera', then moves to close variations like 'how to repot a houseplant', and ends with the wider subject, such as 'indoor plants'. Specific phrases match what people type when they want exactly your content, while broad ones describe the general category. Adding the description and audience fields gives the tool more to work with, so the tags reflect what is really in the video or post.

Tags on other platforms

Each platform treats tags differently. On TikTok and Instagram, hashtags go in the caption and a handful of accurate ones is more useful than a long block. An Etsy listing allows 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, and multi-word phrases that shoppers search for work better than single words. Blog tags group related posts for readers. If you also need the caption or the search snippet, use the Instagram Caption Generator or the Meta Description Generator.

Keep tags honest

Adding popular but unrelated tags, or the names of creators and brands that have nothing to do with your content, is treated as misleading metadata and goes against platform spam policies. It can lead to content being removed. The tool is instructed to suggest only tags that describe the topic you entered, and it makes no promises about views or rankings.

Questions

How many tags should I use on YouTube?

There is no set number, only the 500 character limit for the whole tag field. A focused list of 15 to 20 relevant tags fits within it. Fewer accurate tags are better than many loose ones.

Are hashtags and tags the same thing on YouTube?

No. Tags are entered in a separate field and stay hidden. Hashtags are written with a # in the title or description and are clickable. The tool gives you both.

Does the tag generator look up search volume?

No. It writes tag ideas from the topic, description and audience you enter. It does not pull live data from any platform, so use your own analytics to see what works.

Can I paste the tags straight into YouTube?

Yes. The YouTube tags come as one comma-separated line, so you can copy it and paste it into the tags field. Check the character counter under the field before saving.

Is the tag generator free?

Yes, it is free to use for videos, posts and listings.
