The subject line decides whether the rest of your email gets read. Describe the email and your audience, and get fifteen subject lines grouped by angle, each with a character count, plus preview text for the five strongest.
Five angles to test
Curiosity, clear benefit, specific numbers, a question and a very short line pull on different reasons to open. Grouping them makes it easy to A/B test one angle against another instead of two near-identical lines.
Keep it under 50 characters
Mobile inboxes cut long subject lines off at roughly 35 to 50 characters. Every line comes with a count, and the 'Short' group stays under 30 for the tightest layouts.
Preview text is a second subject line
The preview (preheader) shows next to or under the subject in most inboxes. Use it to add new information, not to repeat the subject or show 'View in browser'.
Write the email too
Pair these with the Newsletter Generator for the body copy, or the Abandoned Cart Email Generator for recovery emails.
Questions
What is a good email subject line length?
Around 30 to 50 characters works in most inboxes. Shorter lines are safer on mobile.
Do emojis help open rates?
It depends on the audience. Use one where it adds meaning and test it against a plain version.
What words trigger spam filters?
Filters look at sender reputation and behavior more than single words, but ALL CAPS, repeated exclamation marks and misleading 'Re:' prefixes hurt both deliverability and trust.
