Reporters skim hundreds of press releases, so format and the first paragraph matter. Enter your news and key facts, and get a press release in the standard format, with a headline, dateline, factual lead, quotes to approve and a boilerplate.
The standard press release format
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, a headline, a subheadline, a dateline, the lead paragraph, body paragraphs, quotes, an 'About' boilerplate, a media contact and three hash marks to end. Editors expect this order, and following it makes your news easier to use.
Answer the five Ws first
Who, what, when, where and why belong in the first two sentences. If a reporter reads only the lead, they should still have the story.
Quotes that sound human
Quotes should add opinion or context the facts can't, in words a person would say. The quotes are written as suggestions for the spokesperson to review and approve before release.
Share it beyond the newswire
Post the news on social with the LinkedIn Post Generator, and tell your list with the Newsletter Generator.
Questions
How long should a press release be?
Usually 300 to 500 words, about one page. The generator aims for 350 to 500.
Do I need a paid newswire?
Not always. For local news, emailing the release directly to relevant reporters and outlets is often more effective.
What is a press release boilerplate?
A short standard paragraph about your organization that goes at the end of every release.
