Type a name or a word, choose what the poem is for and how it should sound, and get three acrostic poems to pick from. The first letter of every line is in bold, so the name reads down the side, ready to copy into a card, a frame or a school worksheet.

What is an acrostic poem?

An acrostic poem hides a word in its first letters. Read the start of each line from top to bottom and you get the name or word the poem is about. For MOM, the lines might begin with M, O and M again. It is one of the oldest word games in poetry and one of the first poem types children learn at school.

Name poems for birthdays, Mother's Day and Valentine's

Use a person's name for a gift that feels personal: a birthday card, a Mother's Day or Father's Day note, a thank-you for a teacher, or a Valentine's or anniversary message. Pick the occasion and the tone, from sweet and romantic to funny, and the poem is written around that person and that moment.

Acrostic poems for school

Teachers and students use acrostics for spelling words, topic words like SPRING or FRIENDSHIP, and names at the start of the year. Choose Kids for simple words and short, cheerful lines. Under Line length, choose One word for the youngest writers, or Full sentence for older students who want a longer poem to learn from.

Rhyming or free verse, short or long lines

Rhyming lines suit cards and young readers. Free verse sounds more natural and works well for long names. Line length goes from a single word per letter to a full sentence, so the same name can become a quick four-word poem or a longer one with a line for every letter.

Questions

Is the acrostic poem generator free?

Yes. You can write acrostic poems without paying. Signing in keeps a history of your poems.

How long can the name or word be?

Up to 30 characters. Words of 3 to 10 letters give the best poems. Spaces and punctuation are skipped, and longer words use the first 20 letters.

What happens with hard letters like X or Z?

The poem uses real words that start with them, such as Xylophone, eXtra or Zest, so every letter still gets its own line.

Can I make an acrostic poem for kids?

Yes. Choose Kids under Who reads it, and the poem uses simple words, short lines and a happy feel. One word per line is the easiest for early readers.

Why do I get three versions?

Each version takes a different angle on the same name, so you can pick the one that fits best or mix lines from two of them.
