A notice to vacate letter tells your landlord in writing that you are moving out and on what date. Pick your role, enter the names, the property address, your move-out date and the notice period, and the generator drafts a short, polite letter. It uses only the details you type and leaves a [placeholder] for anything you have not decided yet.
What a notice to vacate letter contains
A move out notice letter is short. It has the date it is written, the landlord's or property manager's name, the full address of the rental including the unit number, a clear statement that you are ending the tenancy, and the date you will be out. Most tenants also add a forwarding address for the security deposit, a request for a move-out walkthrough, how the keys will be returned, and a phone number or email. Sign it with the names of every tenant on the lease.
How much notice do you need to give?
A 30 day notice to landlord is the most common for month-to-month rentals, but it is not universal. Some leases ask for 60 days, some places set their own minimums, and a fixed-term lease may have its own rules about ending early or not renewing. Required notice periods depend on the lease and on local law, so read the lease first and choose the notice period that matches it. The tool never works out dates for you - check yours against a calendar.
Delivering the letter and getting your deposit back
Check whether your lease says how notice must be given. Keep a copy of the signed letter and send it by a method that gives you proof of delivery, such as mail with a delivery receipt, or hand delivery with a dated acknowledgment. Always include a forwarding address so the landlord knows where to send the security deposit and any statement of deductions. Photos of the unit on move-out day are a useful record.
If you are a landlord
The tool can also write a plain end-of-tenancy notice from a landlord to a tenant. Notice and eviction rules are set by state and local law, and many areas require specific wording, forms or reasons. The letter from this tool is not an eviction notice and is not legal advice, so check the rules for your area before sending. For day-to-day rental questions try the Landlord Assistant, and use the Rental Listing Description Generator when you advertise the unit again.
Questions
Is a notice to vacate the same as an eviction notice?
No. A notice to vacate from a tenant simply tells the landlord the tenant is leaving. An eviction is a legal process started by a landlord and has its own required notices under state and local law. This tool does not write eviction notices.
Can I send my notice by email or text?
Only if your lease or local rules allow it. Many leases require written notice delivered in a specific way. When in doubt, send a signed letter and keep proof of delivery, and email a copy as well.
What if I need to move out before my lease ends?
Read the early termination section of your lease and talk to your landlord. You may owe rent or a fee, and the rules differ by location. The letter can state your planned move-out date, but it does not change what the lease says.
Do all tenants need to sign?
It is safest for every adult named on the lease to sign the notice, so there is no question about who is ending the tenancy.
Is the notice to vacate letter generator free?
Yes, it is free. The result is a draft from your own details, so read it, fill in any placeholders and check it against your lease before sending.
