A flash of red at the feeder, a brown bird on the lawn, a hawk on a wire: upload a photo and this bird identifier gives you the most likely species, the field marks it spotted, and the look-alikes to rule out. You also get a line on its habitat and a note on whether it stays all year. It works in the browser on a phone or a computer.

How the bird identifier works

The AI looks at bill shape, head pattern, wing bars, tail, leg colour, size cues and plumage. It names its best guess, tells you how sure it is and points to the marks in your photo so you can compare them with a field guide.

Take a photo that helps

A side view of the whole bird shows the most. Get the bill, the head and the tail in frame if you can, and note the size next to something you know. A blurry bird on a branch is still worth trying; add what you heard and saw in the notes box.

Why the region matters

Many species look alike but live in different places. Pick your region and the guess narrows to birds that are really around you. Plumage also changes with age, sex and season, and the tool says when that could change the answer.

Watch kindly

Keep your distance, never approach a nest and leave a young bird on the ground alone unless it is in danger. If a bird looks hurt, contact a local wildlife rescue rather than trying to treat it yourself.

Questions

Is the bird identifier free?

Yes, it is free to use. Runs are paced rather than sold, so heavy use in a short window can mean a short wait.

What photo works best?

A sharp side view of the whole bird, in daylight, with the bill and tail in frame. Add where you saw it in the notes.

Can it identify a bird from a blurry photo?

It will try and tell you how sure it is. A Low confidence answer comes with a note on what to photograph next.

Does it work for birds outside my country?

Yes. Pick the closest region, or choose not sure, and the answer stays general.

Can it identify a bird by its song?

No, this tool reads photos only. You can describe the song in the notes box to help the guess.

What if the bird looks hurt?

Do not handle it. Contact a local wildlife rescue for advice.
