Pick a genre, a role and how good or flawed the character should be, and this character personality generator builds a personality that holds together: strengths, flaws, small quirks, a fear, what they want, and how they talk.

Who uses a character personality generator

Novelists use it to break out of characters who all sound the same. Game masters use it to give a non-player character a personality in seconds. Roleplayers and fan-fiction writers use it to find a fresh angle on a character they are building. It is also a quick writing exercise: generate a personality and write one scene where it shows.

How to use it

Choose a genre and the role the character plays: hero, villain, mentor, sidekick, rival or love interest. Set the trait balance (balanced, mostly good, mostly flawed or morally grey) and pick a quick list or a full profile. If you already know something about the character, type it in and the rest is built around it. Run it again for a different take.

Why flaws matter

A character with only good traits is hard to believe and hard to write conflict for. Real flaws, such as pride, impatience or a need to be liked, push characters into mistakes, and mistakes drive plots. The generator always pairs strengths with flaws that cause trouble, plus a fear and a motivation that pull in different directions.

From personality to story

Use the story hook as a first scene. Use the speech style to keep dialogue consistent. Once the personality feels right, the character backstory generator and character name generator on this site can fill in the past and the name.
