What is the maxilla?

The maxilla is the upper jaw bone that supports the middle face, nose base, and lower eyelid area. Strong forward projection (“forward growth”) provides under-eye support and a balanced profile.

Signs of recession

In profile, a recessed maxilla may show as a flat midface, weak under-eye support, a nose that appears large relative to the chin, or lips that look protrusive compared to the skeletal base.

• Flat or “sunken” midface in side profile
• Prominent eye bags or hollowing under the eyes
• Nasolabial folds appearing early
• Chin looks strong mainly because the maxilla is set back
