Seasonal colour analysis is really three questions - warm or cool, light or deep, bright or muted - and the twelve-season system is just the grid those answers land on. This consultant asks them with tests you can do at a window, names the season, and then spends the time on what to buy.
Undertone decides warm or cool. Value decides whether your overall colouring is light or deep, which is about contrast between hair, skin and eyes as much as about the skin itself. Chroma decides whether you carry clear, saturated colour or whether it overwhelms you and softer, greyed shades suit better. Season names are just the combinations: a Bright Winter is cool, deep and high-chroma; a Soft Autumn is warm, mid and muted.
Colour analysis is about what reflects up onto your skin. A colour that is wrong for your season is fine in a skirt, a bag or a sofa. The rule applies to shirts, scarves, collars, knitwear, hair colour and lipstick, and essentially nothing else - which makes it far cheaper to apply than people expect.
The value of knowing your season is walking past three-quarters of a rail without trying anything on. If you love a colour outside your palette, wear it - further from your face, or with a scarf in your palette at the neckline.
Can I do this without professional draping?
You can get to the right season most of the time with good daylight and a few fabric tests. Draping is more accurate at the boundaries between neighbouring seasons.
Does my season change if I dye my hair?
Your skin's undertone does not, but your value and contrast do, which can move you to a neighbouring season. That is worth knowing before a big colour change, not after.
Is twelve seasons better than four?
It is more precise at the cost of being harder to self-diagnose. This consultant works in four first and only splits further when your answers are clear.
