Type a name or a short line and this Old English font generator rewrites it in blackletter characters such as 𝔒𝔩𝔑 π”ˆπ”«π”€π”©π”¦π”°π”₯. Choose regular or bold Fraktur, then copy the result and paste it into a bio, a post or a chat.

What Old English or blackletter lettering is

Blackletter is the dense, angular style of writing used by scribes in western Europe from around the 12th century. Gutenberg set his Bible in a blackletter type, and the Fraktur variety stayed common in German printing into the 20th century. In English-speaking countries the style is usually called Old English or gothic. The name refers to the look of the letters, not to the Old English language spoken before the Norman Conquest.

How the Old English text generator works

This is not a font file. A font is picked by the app that shows your text, so you cannot paste one into a profile. Instead the tool replaces each letter with a Unicode character from the Fraktur set, which was added to Unicode for use in mathematics. The result is plain text that happens to look like blackletter. Spaces, numbers and punctuation are left unchanged, because Unicode has no Fraktur digits. Five regular capitals - C, H, I, R and Z - were added to Unicode earlier than the rest and sit in a different block, so on some devices they can look slightly different from their neighbors. Bold Fraktur has no such gaps.

Where a gothic font generator is useful

Blackletter copy and paste text suits short, decorative lines: a display name, an Instagram or TikTok bio, a Discord nickname, a heading in a post, a band or team name, or a mock newspaper masthead. Offline, the same style appears on diplomas, certificates, tattoos and beer labels, so it reads as traditional or dramatic. It is hard to read in long passages. Keep it to a few words and leave the rest in normal letters.

Limits you should know about

Not every app or device can draw these characters. Where support is missing you will see empty boxes or question marks, and some platforms reject them in usernames altogether. Screen readers may read each character by its Unicode name or skip it, and in-app search will not match the styled word to the plain one. Do not use blackletter characters for anything a person must be able to read, such as contact details, a link or a legal name. Check the pasted result on a second device.

Questions

Is this a real Old English font?

No. It produces Unicode characters that look like blackletter. To set a document in a true Old English typeface you need a font installed in your word processor or design program.

What is the difference between Fraktur and bold Fraktur?

They are the same letter shapes in two weights. Bold is heavier and easier to read at small sizes, and its alphabet sits in one continuous Unicode block.

Why do some letters show as boxes?

The device has no glyph for them. This is more common on older phones and computers. Try the other weight, or use the style only where you have checked that it displays.

Can I convert numbers?

No. Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers, spaces and punctuation stay exactly as typed.

Is the result always exact?

An AI model converts the text from a fixed character table. Compare the result with what you typed before posting, especially for names. Each run takes up to 200 characters.
